Different Types of Security Seals and Their Advantages

 

 

Cable seals. Cable seals are durable seals that are used to seal valves, locked doors, and other items that have a small opening through which a cable wire can be inserted. Some cable seals meet ISO 17712 ratings for high security, so can be used for high-security situations like international cargo shipping. Different size jobs require different cable lengths, although excess cable length can be easily trimmed. They also come in different cable diameters, typically ranging from 1.5mm to 5mm.

 

Bolt seals. Bolt seals are another high-security seal option that are designed with a complex locking mechanism yet are self-locking so do not require tools and are easy to put in place. They have a steel bolt and a tamper-evident body part that are manually attached to form a seal. They are customizable by color, print, and barcoding for additional security layers. These seals are ideal for containers, trailer door latches, and cross border shipments. These heavy duty seals require a bolt cutter to be removed.

 

Fixed-length plastic seals. Fixed-length plastic seals are among the strongest type of plastic seal, with breaking strengths ranging from 80-135lbs. These seals work exceptionally well for securing cargo for truck shipments. Fixed-length seals are inexpensive, so they are a good option when cost is a concern.

 

Plastic pull-tight seals. Pull-tight seals are similar to fixed-length plastic seals, except that they come in a wider variety of breaking strengths and are adjustable to match specific needs. For example, pull-tight seals can be used for sealing hazardous waste, fire extinguishers, cash bags, vehicle doors, and more. Adjustable plastic seals are a good option when you have various needs as they are versatile.

 

Wire seals. Wire seals also have multiple varieties similar to plastic pull-tight seals, but their metal wires make are less likely due to break. These are ideal for when the seals need to fit through small openings.

 

Metal strap seals. Metal strap seals are similar to fixed-length plastic seals, except for the material. Their material makes them more durable than plastic strap seals. You can increase the security level of metal strap seals with custom numbering, printing, and barcoding. Like the plastic option, metal strap seals are a good choice for trucking cargo.

 

Padlock seals. Padlock seals are relatively small seals and are extremely easy to use. They typically are used to prevent doors from being opened. Wire padlock seals are ideal for securing meters and drums, while plastic padlock seals are ideal for securing food and beverage carts, first aid kits, and zipper bags.

Applications of Wire Seals

The crimp wire seal is one of the most commonly used seals for measuring and metering. These seals are composed of lead, aluminum, or aluminum alloys. A seal press or pliers can be used to squeeze the wire into the holes and seal it in place. When a seal press uses a hardened die, the seal may be matched to the press by the marks pressed into it. These might be simple patterns, or they could be numerals or characters.

Self-locking wire seals, such as barcoded seals, are preferably used nowadays. Connectors are critical to today's cars. Without them, it would be nearly impossible to build or service a car. Whenever a bundle of wires passes through or attaches to a component of the car that might have to be removed, there must be a connector there to allow for that removal. The Shell
The shell is an intricate piece that has a complicated shape. There is a locking clip on the outside that holds the two halves of the connector together. There are holes for the pins, and there are special barbs that lock the pins in place once they are inserted. There are numerous grooves to hold seals and make sure things fit together tightly. All of these features are molded into the piece when it is made.

 

The Pins and Sockets
The pins and sockets are responsible for conducting electricity from one half of the connector to the other. These are made very precisely so that the pins and sockets fit together with just enough force to ensure a good connection, but not enough force to make connecting and disconnecting too difficult.

The pins are crimped to the wires using a special crimping tool. Part of the pin wraps around the bare wire, while another part clamps onto the insulation. This makes it harder to pull the wire away from the pin.

 

The Pin/Socket Retainer
The pin/socket retainer is a piece of plastic that slides into the connector from the front. It wedges against all of the plastic locking barbs so they can't release. This piece makes it nearly impossible for the pins and sockets to work their way loose.

 

The Seals
The seals prevent water from entering the connection once the connectors are locked together. Each connector has a rubber seal through which all of the wires are fed. This seal fits firmly into the back of the connector. One side of each connector has a round seal that keeps water from entering the space between the connectors once they are locked together.
